Nashville Lifestyles\' HOT LIST From the Tennessean....
Is it HOT in here?
When you see smoke sometimes there’s fire. But, in the case of the people and places we’ve included in this section—our inclusions are just beginning to really smolder. Like the heat of any good flame, the things you’ll find among our discoveries featured on the following pages are warming in an intoxicating way, without scorching the senses. Our list includes what to watch, what to listen to, where to visit and a few experiences you won’t be able to resist—igniting your summer till it’s white-hot. This is THE Hot List 2009.

Our Cover Girl
If she could have anyone at her dinner table, her first choice would be her Grandma Faye—who she will gush about missing terribly. If you ask her what her most treasured possession is, she’ll let you know first that it’s her soul, and secondly, it really isn’t hers at all to claim or own—that’s in God’s hands. She’s humble and values honesty and respect in herself and in others. And, while she loves fashion, she truly believes that a bad attitude can ruin any outfit, no matter how much it costs. Meet Kellie Pickler. A girl who’s heart is as real and moving as her voice.

Pickler’s almost instant success on the country charts was no shock, since she captured our hearts with her tear-filled performance of “I Wonder” (a song about the mother who abandoned her as a child) at the CMA awards. Her raw talent and vulnerability made her an instant fan favorite, and she hasn’t disappointed followers with her latest album, simply titled Kellie Pickler. “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful” was the first hit, a song that inspires and empowers young girls. The next single that got noticed was one co-written with Taylor Swift (who sings backup and also appears in the video). “Best Days of Your Life” is a top 15 single and one of the most uplifting songs playing on country radio this year.

With all these attributes, it’s easy to see why we chose Ms. Pickler as our lead-in to all that’s hot in Music City for 2009. She’s a fantastic performer and a gifted songwriter, who has all the while remained grounded and genuine despite the fame she’s earned. She’s all of that, and a bag of chips. For those who don’t follow Southern slang, that means she’s the whole package.

Kellie Up Close
—My favorite designers are Badgley Mischka, Zuhair Murhad, BCBG Max Azria, Christian Louboutin, YSL, Jimmy Choo—but at the end of the day you’re more likely going to find me in Walmart or Target. My favorite casual look is a T-shirt, jeans and cute flats. Really, the secret to looking good is to laugh a lot!

—The go-to item in my closet actually is anything from Lululemon Athletica. I love their yoga pants and tops—so comfortable. The most extravagant item in my closet is my favorite pair of Christian Louboutin shoes. I’ve never even worn them because I’m scared they’re going to get messed up. I’m a little O.C.D. when it comes to shoes! It’s retail therapy for me to buy shoes.

—I can’t live without Neutrogena cleansing or hair products. You can find them at any drug store, they aren’t expensive and they work. For makeup, I like MAC cosmetics and Bare Minerals.

—I don’t have a favorite cocktail but can really enjoy a good glass of red wine, great company and finding someone else to make dinner, as I don’t cook. For a guilty indulgence, I choose French fries. My travel choice is any beach as long as I have a few good books. I love to read. For magazines, I like Nashville Lifestyles, Elle, Vanity Fair and décor or travel pubs. Reading is a big part of writing. Two eyes and two hands means you should read as much as you write.

—If there’s anyone I can give credit to when it comes to style and taste, it’s hands down my “big sis,” Aimee Mayo. It doesn’t matter what she’s wearing, because she always has the perfect smile. I love Aimee and her husband Chris so much. They’re not only my adopted Nashville family, but likely the best blessing that’s ever happened to me.

Take Care Everyone,

Earlier this week, we announced Maxim’s list for the “Hottest Women in Country Music.” Complex Magazine just recently released a list of their own, giving the top spot to Dancing with the Stars turned country star, Julianne Hough. Taylor Swift came in at a close second, proving that even girls that write mean songs about their ex-boyfriends can still be considered hot. Carrie Undewood, who just released her third album, Play On, on November 3 came in third. Newcomer Jessie James followed in fourth place. After years of being considered one of the hottest in country music, Faith Hill still came in at number 5. The girls of Gloriana, Cheyenne Kimball and Rachel Reinert, shared the number six spot. The Wreckers, Jessica Harp and Michelle Branch, shared the number seven spot. LeAnn Rimes ranked at number eight and Kellie Pickler and Miranda Lambert closed out the list at nine and ten.

After the release of the Maxim list, many country fans were upset that Terri Clark had been overlooked and it looks like Complex Magazine made the same mistake. Think Complex missed anyone else from their list? Think anyone should have been ranked at a different spot? Let us know!

Sarah Palin book tour kicks off to cheering crowds
Thousands of Americans herald their 'uber-patriot' idol as Going Rogue launches to a soft country soundtrack
Sarah Palin arrives for the start of her Going Rogue book-signing tour at the Woodland Mall in Kentwood, Michigan. Photograph: Jeff Kowalsky/Epa

The Second Coming of Sarah Palin felt an awful lot like the first one.

There was the strikingly familiar figure, dressed in a scarlet jacket and black skirt, bounding off a bus emblazoned with her name and a gigantic picture of her smiling face.

There were the cheering throngs, waving US flags and chanting for the object of their political desire.

"Sarah! Sarah!" shouted the chorus as the song Only in America boomed out.

Finally there was the quick speech in her familiar Alaskan twang to thank those who had stood for hours to see her return to her public.

Palin was all beaming, broad smiles and even got in a customary dig at the press pack. "Thank you so much for showing up so that you can read my words unfiltered by the media," she told her followers, her voice rising above the squeals of those gathered outside a Barnes & Noble book shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

It was just like the presidential election victory of Barack Obama in November last year had never happened.

But, of course, it did happen and Palin was not in Grand Rapids to get anyone's vote. She was there to get their hard-earned cash in return for her memoir Going Rogue.

In that mission, unlike the doomed McCain-Palin election ticket, Palin has been stunningly successful.

In launching one of the most remarkable book tours in American political and publishing history, Palin is becoming a dizzying mix of celebrity and politician. Her folksy blend of right-wing rhetoric, uber-patriotism and winning smile is as heady a brew as ever for those millions and they do number in the millions of Americans for whom she is a hero.

For them Palin is not a liberal media joke or a stumbling backwoods politician who fluffed her chance at the big time. She is a truth-teller and their last best hope against the encroaching horrors of socialism. She is St Sarah of American Capitalism.

Nothing else could explain the utter devotion and enthusiasm of the thousands of people (almost all of them white) who showed up at the first stop of Palin's 14-state, three-week tour of the American heartland.

They queued for 24 hours just to be first in line, bringing tents and camp chairs to a gigantic mall on Grand Rapids' outskirts.

They braved rain and cold for Palin's signature on a book and an estimated 5 seconds each of face-time with their idol.

"She's about truth, integrity and working for the people. People just have to let her be who she is. That's what she is about," said Robin Case, 44, who is now caring for her parents-in-law full-time after losing her job in the car industry.

Case had driven for hours and camped through the night just to be one of the 1,000 lucky people who like winning a golden ticket to Palin's chocolate factory got a precious orange wristband that allowed them access to the book signing.

They trooped through the shop in orderly lines, shepherded upstairs by politely smiling midwestern minders, and disappeared behind a blue curtain where the object of their desire awaited.

There Palin signed away often two books per person for several hours

Few emerged looking less than utterly delighted. Yet hundreds of other people were not so lucky.

They had waited anyway outside the mall, desperate for a change of mind, or a glimpse of their heroine. One of them was Michael Cesar, who had waited with no wristband but in great spirits just to be part of Palin's comeback tour.

"I am here because Sarah Palin gives me hope," Cesar said as behind him three young children played chase and chanted, "Love Sarah Palin! Love Sarah Palin!".

A CNN television truck pulled up, triggering a round of loud boos from a crowd that almost certainly trended towards watching Fox.

But that was the only angry emotion at the event. The atmosphere was more of a rightwing carnival. People wore Palin hats, Palin T-shirts and Palin Power stickers. They read avidly from her book and often broke out into opposing chants of "Sarah! Sarah!" as if at a good-natured football game.

Some people even had good words to say about Obama, unlike Palin herself who as part of her media blitz in recent days rated his presidency four out of 10.

"I didn't vote for him. But I don't dislike him. He's got a great family," said Mandi Sutton, 19, who is about to join the military.

But as for Palin? "There is no other person in the world I would rather meet. I just love her," Sutton said.

One thing that nearly everyone shared was a fear of where they thought America was headed. People were scared of rising unemployment and worried about terrorism. They were wary of their own government and looking for someone to save them. They bandied around words like "socialist" for Obama and "pro-America" for Palin, but were seemingly not too sure of the exact definition of either.

It is that rich mother lode of hard-to-define anger and fear that Palin is now tapping into with her book tour. Many supporters were desperate for her to run again and she is turning her book launch into an expertly choreographed rightwing dance across the heartland of America. She has a coterie of media handlers, a cleverly planned schedule of friendly TV interviews and will sign tens of thousands of books.

As the first fans were ushered into meet her it was hard not to read significance into the triumphant-sounding country song playing out of the store's sound system.

It was American Idol star Kellie Pickler's Red High Heels and as the masses shuffled up the stairs to meet Palin the chorus rang out: "I'll bet you want me back now don't you, don't you? I'm about to show you just how missin' me feels. In my red high heels."

Much of the American public has been missing her and Palin's heels are definitely back in US political life. But exactly where they will take her few can predict.

    DANCING WITH THE STARS
And then there were three and more.

Today’s entertainment news reads like a “Dancing with the Stars” hullabaloo. Let’s first deal with that, shall we?

Julianne Hough has made her intention known. She will not return to “Dancing with the Stars” for the spring edition. Julianne is trying to get her country singing career going and she’s been talking with Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler. In fact those two have taken her under their wing (so to speak). Julianne also has movies in the works including the remake of “Footloose”. The question really is: Will Julianne ever return to “Dancing with the Stars”. Also, will Derek follow his sister lead as he tries to make a go of it in the music world?

Good news for several Idols in this week's digital tracks numbers from Nielsen SoundScan. Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson both pass download milestones with their latest: Cowboy Casanova is the week's best-selling Idol single, its 74,000 downloads pushing it past a half-million overall, and the 47,000 downloads for Kelly's Already Gone takes that track past 700,000.

Meanwhile, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen both see sales increases of more than 40 percent for their singles. And Daughtry's performance of Tennessee Line on the Country Music Association Awards results in that track making the chart for the first time.

    Congrats all around.

Last week's Country Music Association Awards gave country music sales a much needed shot in the arm. Just about every country act saw a nice sales boost except, well, Carrie Underwood. I'm thinking Carrie's profile was so high in the weeks before the CMA Awards that one more TV performance more or less didn't really affect her album's performance. So Play On had a more typical second week for a superstar act, as sales dropped 60 percent. It's still the top-selling American Idol album out there, though, its 128,000 sales giving Carrie a two-week total of 446,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Even Daughtry benefited from his CMA performance, as weekly sales of Leave This Town jumped 60 percent.

Sales of Christmas music also continue to pick up, as more and more holiday releases hit the shelves (looks like Andrea Bocelli's My Christmas is going to be the holiday hit of the season). David Archuleta's Christmas From the Heart got past the 10,000 mark again, with a nice 56 percent increase in its weekly sales.

Carrie Underwood, Play On (128,000, -60 percent, 446,000 total/18,000 digital, -72 percent, 80,000 digital total)

    Kellie's Look Made Easy
Kellie Pickler has a more relatable look than most celebs: her new brunette/auburn hair and impish smile son't intimidate me! I had a dig through my makeup box to see what works best for sexy eyes, and here's what I recommend for a smoldering look.

I go through a lot of products before I even get close to picking the ones that work for me. By trial and error, here's what made getting smokey, smoldering eyes that last easier. It looks like even Kellie Pickler played around with her look now that she's got an alter-ego redhead, so let's cut to the chase!

Invest in an eyeshadow palette to make things simple. Sometimes, when I try to purchase select eyeshadows recommended in shows and mags, I end up wishing I had the complementary ones--leading to another bout of shopping! Now I grab a palette and simplify my makeup bag--the one I loved was the jane iredale Eye Shadow Palette in "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes ." They even tell you how to use the different colors on the website: darkest colors in a sideways v, highlight above the iris in a medium shade, and then highlight the brow bone with the lightest shade.

Next up? I've been using cheap-but-awesome Wet 'n' Wild eyeliner in black to make my eyes pop, finished off with Chanel mascara.

I love it when red carpet looks are so accessible! Would you use Kellie Pickler as inspiration?

Kellie Pickler has entertained troops stationed overseas in the Persian Gulf for the past two years, and she's set for her third USO tour sometime after Christmas. This year, she'll be joined by Jamey Johnson and Randy Houser, and says, "I'm very sure I'll have some very interesting stories to share when I get back. I'm sure there will never be a dull moment."

Kellie can't really tell us where or exactly when she'll be going overseas, though. "Honestly, we never find out where we're going to be going until we get on the plane and they hand us our tour book, and that'll tell us where we're gonna be," she explains. "Now this past Christmas, Bobby -- I always call him Bobby -- [Kid Rock] and Zac Brown Band and a few comedians, we went to Afghanistan. We went to Iraq, Kosovo, Germany, England and Afghanistan. We did nine shows in five days. We worked real hard, but it was completely worth it. We had a blast."

With her recent appearance on the 'Ellen DeGeneres Show' and her interview with idol Dolly Parton on 'Entertainment Tonight' airing Thursday, many think Kellie would be a natural for her own talk show. While the auburn-tressed singer says she currently doesn't have the time or a huge desire to do something like that, it could happen down the road.

HAZEL wrote....This is only part of the article you can read it all on the thread about HAZEL....
Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler should not have gone home empty-handed. They were great. I even like Kellie's hair color changing from blond to brunette, although it is a little shocking at first.

Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band and Kellie Pickler had the opportunity to get to know each other during a USO tour, which included stops in Iraq, Kosovo and Afghanistan. And now that friendship could lead to something more.

"Oh, man, she's a firecracker, no doubt," Zac tells 'CMT Country Countdown USA' host Lon Helton. "We'd go to three different bases a day, helicopter in, play a show, sign 400 things, shake 400 hands, jump in a helicopter, fly to another base, play a show, shake 400 hands. It was a lot of work, but it's so rewarding being able to go places where there had never been entertainment there, ever. Kellie is a sweetheart, and I've got a song a duet that I wrote that I think she would be perfect to sing on."

For her part, Kellie says she was impressed with Zac's devotion to his family, saying, "I just love that about people -- when you meet them and the first thing they want to tell you about is their wife. I have a great deal of respect for him. I think he's an incredible person ... very talented but most importantly, he's got a good heart. He's a good man."

Of their potential duet, Zac reveals, "She said she'd love to do it. It's just a matter of getting the timing down together to do it, but it's a smash."
