LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Carrie Underwood is on track to achieve her second No. 1 album on the U.S. pop chart next week, although sales will be sharply lower than for the country star's previous effort.

Music industry prognosticators suggest Underwood's "Play On" could sell over 300,000 copies in the week ended Sunday. Data will be published on Wednesday.

The former "American Idol" champ's last album, 2007's "Carnival Ride," topped the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 527,000 copies; it has gone on to sell 2.98 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The new album's lead single, "Cowboy Casanova," peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Inaugural "American Idol" champ Kelly Clarkson, the only other success story from the TV talent show, topped the Billboard 200 in March with "All I Ever Wanted," which sold 255,000 copies in its first week.

"Play On" will lead a cavalcade of new albums in the top 20 of the Billboard 200 next week, with the soundtrack to Fox TV's "Glee" likely as the next-best debut. The album may sell over 100,000 copies in its first week.

Weezer's "Raditude," the new "Now 32" compilation, Andrea Bocelli's "My Christmas" and Foo Fighters' "Greatest Hits" are all on course to make lofty chart entries as well.

The current Billboard 200 champ is Michael Jackson's "This Is It," which sold 373,000 copies during the week ended November 1, according to Nielsen SoundScan

The reason Taylor's fearles cd stayed at #1 for so many weeks on billboard is because thare was really no strong competition around for many weeks. Plus all the tenny bopers were buying he cd's. They actually spend the most money. Carrie will have stiff competition from all the new releases from big stars so I don't expect her to stay at #1 for too long. But never fear, she is here to stay on charts for a long time

When Carnival Ride was released two years ago, it was a different economic climate. People had jobs and money to spend on CD's. Some of those same people are homeless now and buying a CD has become a luxury. There is nothing wrong with over 300,000 sold. Some hearts sold that and look how that turned out. Carrie put out a great CD and it will have a few #1s but it's not all about the sales and awards. It's about pleasing her fans and herself in the process. At least that's what it should be about. She has won every possible award there is and will surely win many more. Maybe not this year. Taylor has had a tremendous year and even though we know she can never be as good of a singer as Carrie, we need to give credit where credit is due. Taylor needs to be recognized for what she has brought to country music. A gazilion new young fans. At least I hope the academy gives her her due.

"Inaugural "American Idol" champ Kelly Clarkson, the only other success story from the TV talent show"

What a load of crap. Have they forgotten about Daughtry? What about Jennifer Hudson? Both are doing quite well for themselves. And Kellie Pickler isn't doing too badly herself. SOME finalists from the show have faded into obscurity (a lot really), but certainly not all.

    Smitty,

This is purely a prediction, and it's honestly pretty solid considering how weak the market it is. When her awesome pre-sale numbers and digital sales, it's probably expected that she will do very well once all the numbers are factored in.

You should also remember that Carrie has already had a few stellar TV peformances, and she has some of the most high-profile apperances around coming soon.

There's no doubt in my mind that her TV special, profie on the Biography network, Invitation Only Special and CMA awards host will raise her sales considerably.

Not to mention she will be on almost every magazine and TV station around- she is the most successful American Idol for a reason (:
