Getting a beer at LP Field.....

I was refused a beer even on ultra-polite appeal to the 'beer-policeman' who happened to be watching his boys-in-blue servers at the beer stall at the entrance of Lower Level seating block 135/136, final Sunday night. He was described to me by the boys as their boss. I have drafted a letter which puts this sad business into a context and am sending it to the Mayor of Nashville and to Tammy Genovese, the CMA Chief Executive Officer. I'm happy to post it here in full but for now if anyone can let me know what Tammy's address is, I'd appreciate it. Unless that is you're reading this Tammy. Would it be in the CMA building in Commerce Street I wonder ? (My hotel was in the same street and I just happened to spot it.) Where it may I am sure been inconvient for you as well as annoying, you must consider it is a law in all states regardless of if it is at a venue such as the CMA Fest or not, the younger people have caused this with the way they are getting fake id's and sneeking around to get beer and whatever else they can.

Would you want them to sell beer to your minor child.

I do feel that however when they card you once and they know that they have already served you that it is redundent, to force you to give them the id again.

I am 53 and I think I look my age maybe not so much but still I do look like I am at least 21, but I have been carded right here in my own home town, so I do expect to be carded anywhere

Hope when you come back this year you have a better experience.

This is a little late in coming, but, my personal opinion, is that it's necessary to cover themselves (CMT) if a problem occurs. The biggest problem was the way the rules were interpreted by the server. I have had the same seats for seven years. The same server was working all four nights during the concerts. He stopped to serve my husband (64) and me (62) several times over the four nights. Each and every time he demanded an ID....I'm pretty sure my age remained the same during those four nights and I know he remembered us because I ran into him, on the stairs, and he spoke to me, so checking an ID each time was redundant and a waste of time and energy on both our parts.

Thanks you Guys for those 3 insightful remarks. It seems I may have inadvertently stumbled across something bigger than I thought. Is this the ultra-conservative, puritanical face of the US ? Well it would be OK if it was consistent - why downtown anybody can get served or in Hotels. But I'm puzzled what real purpose these laws serve. It can only be that there's no political currency for your politicians to change anything - they'd never get voted in I suppose. You clearly haven't really recovered from prohibition.

We all had to show ID. I am 50 and a US citizen and had to show my ID. My problem was the security guard that was yelling at me to SIT DOWN! while I was getting a beer and showing my ID. Ridiculous. Remember, when in the US, ALWAYS carry ID.

Thanks for these two posts - I am so ignorant of this US custom/law. I have written to the TN Governor, Nashville's Mayor and Tammy, telling them what I think. The letter might be a bit different now I know this thing is so widespread - it seems to be a hang-over (pun unintentional) from prohibition times. Perhaps casualties like me are a necessary price to pay if alcohol problems in your country are under control - but are they really ? I doubt it somehow. Your social alcohol problem is just the same as ours and these laws, I'm guessing, are nothing more than a red-herring. Can't wait to hear from the people who really know !

it is the same way here in oklahoma also. people have to id everyone who wants to purchase a product with alcohol in it. it is the same with any product that has tobacco also. it is to keep products out of the hands of anyone who is under the age of 21 for alcohol and 18 for tobacco. i have worked here in tulsa at state fairs and shows and no matter the age of the person, it has to be done! if it is not, then not only does the person and company involved get into trouble,if you are with an organization, you could be banned from participating in any fundraising at all! you could also get put into jail also if you do not id someone.

It's a state law that in Tennessee, anyone who wants to purchase alcohol HAS to be I.D.'ed. I worked at a grocery story in TN and had to check everyone's I.D., even if they looked to be about 90. It was a stupid law that I hated to do, but nonetheless, it was a law and I was not going to be fired for not doing it.

Also, most of the time when people do concessions at LP Field, they are doing fundraising for a group, most often a church. If they broke the law and got caught, not only when the vendor get in trouble, but so would the organization that they are with. They aren't going to risk breaking the law for anyone.
