EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION - "Terpenning family -- "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and celebrity volunteer Kellie Pickler travel to Beavercreek, Ohio, to tell James Terpenning, a wheelchair sports champion and mentor to disabled Iraqi War veterans, that he and his family will have a newly rebuilt home in seven days. James, a computer specialist at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is known at work and in the community as an inspirational role model who always helps others but never asks for help himself. Extreme Makeover Home Edition designer, Michael Moloney makes magic and helps transform lives each week on the show. But, this season he’s got help from a whole group of celebrities who he’s whipping into shape. EMHE has been an emotionally rewarding job for Moloney, but now he’s getting to see that journey through the eyes of the stars and the families they’re helping along the way.
Moloney, who just started his seventh season on EMHE, shares his thoughts about the celebs participating and why he believes the reality series continues to dominate Sunday nights.

Crippled
by
polio
during
infancy
and
abandoned
by
his
American
G.I.
father
in
Vietnam,
James
nevertheless
considers
himself
one
of
the
luckiest
people
in
the
world.
He
was
supposed
to
be
airlifted
out
of
Vietnam
on
a
military
plane
that
crashed,
killing
all
the
children
and
aid
workers
aboard.
Instead,
he
had
safe
passage,
leading
to
a
new
life
in
America
as
an
adopted
son
in
an
Ohio
family.
While
growing
up,
James
competed
in
wheelchair
sports
and
later
represented
the
U.S.
at
the
Paralympics,
where
he
earned
both
gold
and
silver
medals.
He
continues
to
serve
his
country
in
civilian
technical
support
for
the
Air
Force
and
by
helping
disabled
veterans.
James
also
is
a
frequent
speaker
at
schools,
educating
children
and
teens
about
living
with
special
challenges.

Kellie
traveled
to
Beavercreek,
Ohio
to
not
only
to
surprise
James
Terpenning
and
his
family
with
news
that
they're
getting
a
new
home,
but
also
to
assist
in
building
that
home
and
performing
at
the
reveal
at
the
end
of
the
show.
James,
who
was
crippled
by
polio
during
infancy,
is
a
computer
specialist
at
Wright-Patterson
Air
Force
Base
and
a
wheelchair
sports
athlete,
and
according
to
Kellie,
his
friends
and
co-workers,
a
really
nice
guy.
"I
got
to
spend
a
little
time
with
the
father
and
the
mother,"
Kellie
tells
The
Boot.
"They're
just
beautiful
souls.
After
you
talk
to
them
and
you
get
to
really
see
who
they
are
and
what
they're
about,
you
become
so
much
more
attached
to
them
and
you
just
really
want
to
make
this
home
the
best
that
it
can
be."
Kellie
explains
that
her
life
was
changed
after
taking
part
in
the
show
and
seeing
more
than
200
volunteers
in
the
community
help
rebuild
the
Terpenning
home,
and
how
really
fast
the
whole
process
was
from
start
to
finish.
"I
was
totally
blown
away
with
how
quickly
everything
happened
from
the
house
destruction
day,
which
was
my
favorite
part,"
she
says.
"I
had
a
lot
to
let
out
on
that
house!
It
was
very
therapeutic
for
me
at
times."
