PUTS ON A GREAT SHOW!!!!
I saw George Jones last night (Fairfax, VA) - he put on a really fantastic show!!!!  I really love his music now - and am so glad I went!!!  His backup singer (she performed a solo before George came on and sometimes does duets with George) was truly amazing too - just love her voice so much - but did not catch her name (please, someone, provide, if you know her name).  I bought 2 of his CDs too!!!  I just love this style of music SO MUCH!!!

My mother told me that George Jones was on the CBS Sunday Morning show (this morning) and that he was terrific - his wife Nancy was on the show too - I missed it - oh well, maybe next time.

George will be touring with Tanya Tucker (Harrah's - Sept. 5) - found this news -
METROPOLIS, Ill. -- The city's contribution in a partnership with Harrah's Metropolis Casino and Hotel toward a series of big-name outdoor concerts already is flowing full circle.

Harrah's riverfront location has the first of a half-dozen concerts in the bag, and the entertainment venue is gearing up for the next. Nashville headliner Josh Turner and country rock veterans The Charlie Daniels Band packed in fans over the Memorial Day weekend.

Coming Saturday, during Metropolis' Superman Celebration weekend, are country legend Merle Haggard and country rocker up-and-comer Shooter Jennings.

Four more concerts are on the books throughout the summer and into autumn. Harrah's is fronting each one with $25,000 in city support from its hotel-motel tax fund.

The Turner-Daniels concert sold 4,913 tickets, the vast majority in advance, said Harrah's spokesman Kyle Shepley.

"We set up for about 5,000 concertgoers, and it definitely had that full feeling," Shepley said. "We considered it very successful."

With the concert in town, so were fans, many using local lodging, eating in local restaurants, taking in the sights, and finding other activities in and around the area, Shepley said.

Shepley said Harrah's hit capacity with all 258 rooms booked. "In fact, we were at 100 percent capacity for room rentals in all of Metropolis," he said.

Harrah's rents rooms from other hotels and motels in the city, and across the river in Paducah, and refers guests to them when its lodging is all taken up. Harrah's figures show that 185 room rentals were sent to Paducah during the concert weekend.

"It was a busy weekend in town," said Metropolis tourism director Angie Shelton of the holiday weekend. "They did very well at all the motels and restaurants."

The hotel-motel tax fund is doing what it was intended to do, Shelton said. Hotel room rentals include a 5 percent tax with those moneys used to promote visitation to the city.

"People need to remember that the money the city voted to pay to Harrah's is not general tax funds," Shelton said.

Charles Barfield, an alderman representing the Metropolis City Council on the hotel-motel tax board, said, "I believe it is money well spent."

Barfield said the city and Harrah's have struck a good partnership in contributing hotel-motel taxes that help Harrah's bring in bigger name acts that, in turn, draw larger numbers of people.

"It's a good thing for Paducah, too," he said. "Those people have filled up the available rooms in Metropolis, and they've got to stop somewhere."

The Metropolis City Council recently approved the hotel-motel tax funding for the fourth of the six concerts. In addition to the Josh Turner and Charlie Daniels show, the city has funded $25,000 contributions for the Haggard and Jennings concert and for Lynyrd Skynyrd on July 3 and country star Dierks Bentley on Aug. 1.

Other concerts to follow are classic country crooner George Jones and Tanya Tucker on Sept. 5 and a return performance for country's Trace Atkins on Oct. 10.

An Atkins concert last year was a trial balloon that flew nicely for Harrah's.

Shepley said, "That sort confirmed what our audience was like, and that local folks as well as people from up to 200 miles away would come to concerts for real headliner acts."

Shepley said bigger crowds could be coming.

"We can handle as many as 6,000 people, so for Lynyrd Skynyrd over the Fourth of July weekend we're renting extra chairs to seat more people," she said.

Sorry you missed seeing George on Fox, Patty. Brooks & Dunn (also one of my favorites) were suppose to be on Fox this past weekend (they were also in Alabama helping out too) but I missed seeing them. That possum story is funny but have heard something like it before. I am sure you have heard it before too.

I missed George on FOX. He does seem like a nice guy and always nice to see an artist help out people in need. That is a neat story about how he got the nickname 'Possum'.

HOPE YOU DO GET TO SEE GEORGE JONES IN PERSON, suzetta!! He really does put on a great show!!! I saw him on the Fox News channel yesterday (Fox & Frineds) in the morning. He (and others) were putting on a concert for the victims of the Alabama tornadoes. He is a nice guy too!! He was only on the show for an interview - was hoping he would get to sing but did not happen. They asked him about why they call him the "Possum" - he said that once he got a crew cut and he has these 'beady eyes' - so some said he looked like a possum - also he was like a possum at some of his shows (no-show) - but, with George Jones' great sense of humor, the name just stuck!!!!!

The song you are thinking of is "Me and Jesus" by Tom T. Hall. I love George's version of it! One of the best gospel songs I have ever heard!

Thnaks so much for letting me know her name is Britney Allyn - thought she was awesome - maybe the best female singer I have ever heard - yeah, George really did great picking her!!! If you were referring to the 2 guys from Canada - thought they were good singers but their songs were so-so (they gave an acoustic performance) - to be honest, I really could not get into their music.

The gospel songs that George (and his group) performed were really great!!! I really can't remember the names of the songs - one had "Jesus" in the title, though.

For those of you who went, what did you think about Two Bullet Parade- who opened for George in Fairfax? I heard some people were not all that impressed, but after seeing them live, I can't believe that!

Her name is Brittney Allyn, she does have her own web site and myspace page.
I love the song Golden Ring she does with George. She is really good. George did good by picking her, imo.

I saw him in February, I can't remember if he did any gospel songs...I bet that was good to hear.
