want to try out for DCC in a few years- how to prepare
Hi! I want to try out for the DCC in a few years but only have cheerleading experience- no dance experience. To fix this, I am going to start taking dance lessons. I was wondering what classes should I take? Is ballet necessary or should I just jump right into jazz or hip-hop? Thanks for your opinions!

Kelli studied Modern Jazz at TCU - good catch FlyMe. Whitney Ott is my favorite dancer on the DCC. I loved to watch her dance. I too wished they could have shown more of her dancing. She was the face on the original opening credits (until this year).

FlyMe, the DCC you are talking about it Whitney Ott. I loved what they did show of her solo. I wish they would have shown more.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about dancing. OK, down to business. You should study the dance style most appreciated by the judges, specifically Kelli. I’ve watched MTT over the last 4 years more times than I care to say. One observation I have made, from those hours in front of the tv that I would like to get back, is the following. Kelli seemed to truly enjoy 2 specific dancers during finals. I say that from her body language, she was moving with the dancer. First was on MTT 1, I don’t recall the DCCs name but she described her dance as hip hop jazz. The 2nd was this year, Brandi. I don’t know her style and we only got to see about 10 seconds of it, BUT it looked very similar to the hip hop jazz routine from that girl in season one. So my 2 cents is, learn several styles to make yourself a well rounded dancer but as you get closer to auditions start concentrating on hip hop jazz. Now if Kelli is not director when you try out - ignore all of the above.

Ballet is the base of all dance! You won't have the ability to do turns or high kick without learning proper technique unless you are lucky. Once you have the fundamentals down you can move on to jazz and hip hop dance techniques which are the current style of most dance teams.

Jazz will help you with your turns and kicks (very important), hip hop will help you with intricacy, ballet is good to take too... Are you in the Dallas area? I would suggest that you go to Powerhouse or Kitty's and tell them you are trying out for DCC and then they can suggest classes based on your level. Hope that helps!

Me personally, I think you should do more jazz and hip hop. From what I see, the DCC concentrates on that.
